The Sound of a Darkened Imagination

Who is Martin Johnson?

Nottinghamshire based sound designer, audio editor and music composer Martin Johnson first became known for his cinematic orchestral music for the critically acclaimed stage adaptations of The Evil of the Daleks (2006) and The Dalek Masterplan (2007). The atmosphere his music generated in these two productions gave audiences spine shivering excitement throughout and left a lasting impression on thousands of Doctor Who fans.

While working on these two stage plays Martin met Big Finish executive producer and Dalek/Cyberman voice actor Nicholas Briggs. It was due to the success of his music for the stage plays that Nick auditioned Martin to work on the officially licenced Doctor Who audio adventures released on CD worldwide and broadcast on BBC radio. Martin had since worked on the monthly series, The Eighth Doctor Adventures, Doctor Who: Unbound and Bernice Summerfield.

Where the interest in media production began...

ThumbnailMartin became interested in media production at a young age. During his school years at the now non-existent Rufford Comprehensive School in Edwinstowe he co-produced two short, but rather crude animations and regularly used the equipment available to experiment with audio visual media. Before leaving school Martin won a Young Filmmakers Award on the ITV Saturday morning children's programme Scratchy & Co. where he met Gail Porter, Natalie Casey and Mark Speight. Martin took media studies at West Nottinghamshire College where he won an award for best radio production and his A-level coursework, a hypothetical marketing campaign for a Tim Burton directed Doctor Who film,Thumbnail was given a 100% award and then kept by the examining body as an example of outstanding work. In his last year of college Martin began to experiment with music production. He first recreated the Lorenzen's Soil level music from the game Earthwork Jim 2 and then created For A Darkened People, the Doctor Who theme that was adapted for Evil of the Daleks after being contacted by the producer. Talented in a wide range of media production, Martin is always up for a challenge and loves to try new things.

What could the future hold?

I have so many things I want to achieve in my life and the problem I have is that I want to do them all as soon as possible. Life is too short!

The one thing I am really working towards is bringing Doctor Who back to the cinema in a similar way Tim Burton reimagined Batman in 1989. I want to explore its roots, its beginnings, and make it darker that the TV series. I would also like it to be a bit more adult, but not to inappropriate extremes that many fans would object to. There would be as little CGI as possible using models and good old filmmaking techniques. In my opinion, the majority of films today are in favour of less convincing cinematography. Separate from the TV series, this Doctor Who film would allow the use of flashbacks, new sets, different actors and reimagined enemies such as the Daleks but keeping as close to the original Raymond Cusick design as possible.

The good thing about this website is that I can showcase my ideas and hopefully, one day, these ideas will get noticed. You never know, that's how it all started!
