Mastering is an important part of the production process and great skill is needed to give results. Have you ever made a music track and wondered why it sounds flat and dull compared to commercially released music? The reason for this is all to do with mastering.

Before the end product is ready for release it must first be mastered for the medium it is intended for whether it is CD, download, broadcast or public presentation. Overall levels between tracks must be consistent unless mastering for a highly dynamic range production such as Gustav Holst's The Planets where the difference between the loudest and quietest music can be quite big. The frequency range is also tweaked if needed to bring out the best of the mix and this can apply to the whole mix or specific instruments. Quite often in music production, especially with pop music, the engineer applies compression and limiting to increase volume levels ready for broadcast. This is why pop music is so loud compared to classical music. The obsession with loudness has become more and more popular with the evolution of portable music players and their safety features that protect the personal listener.

The reason it takes great skill to master a production well is because the engineer has to get the perfect balance. You have to avoid giving too much of an effect so that the final mix becomes unbearably over compressed or the high frequency sounds are painful to the ear.
